    Giving Tuesday 2024

    by Lionel Brahim Brodie III

Initiated in 2012, Giving Tuesday (GivingTuesday) falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. "GivingTuesday is a Movement that Unleashes the Power of Radical Generosity Around the World" – GivingTuesday Official Website. The website goes on to define Radical Generosity as "the concept that the suffering of others should be as intolerable to us as our own suffering."

GivingTuesday was launched by Henry Timms at the 92nd Street Y, New York (92NY), which is a community center located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, New York State. "The co–founding organization was the United Nations Foundation, with support from BLK SHP (Black Sheep)" –  GivingTuesday Wikipedia Page.

So what are we doing? I just watched Buy Now on Netflix. And I mean I knew that suffering was going on.....but I didn't KNOW that SUFFERING was going on. My biggest takeaway from the documentary is when one of the interviewees said something along the lines of (gross paraphrase upcoming): when we throw things away, we view 'away' as this mythical place. But WHERE is 'away'?

This year both Students Run Philly Style (SRPS) and Philadelphia Runner are celebrating a huge milestone! For two decades (20 years), SRPS has empowered the next generation of runners, while we have become a heartbeat of our city’s running community.

To celebrate, and for GivingTuesday, we’re calling on you to Run It Back!

Support Students Run Philly Style's youth mentorship program and reduce waste by giving your old shoes a new purpose! Drop off used shoes (any condition, any type – sneakers, boots, dress, sandals are all acceptable!) for recycling at any Philadelphia Runner location (listed below) and support young people in Philadelphia who train for long–distance races including the Philadelphia Marathon. While Students Run Philly Style youth runners earn brand–new sneakers from Brooks Running each year, the program receives a small donation for every pair of shoes collected for recycling.

I talked about Philadelphia Runner's Shoe Recycling Program a few months ago. You can find all of that information HERE.

If you've been following along, and/or if you know me, you know I love to shop. And recommend things to buy. I mean DUH I get paid to review and recommend things to buy. What I don't talk about enough is how I rarely throw anything 'away'. Shoes get donated or recycled, as well as clothing if I can't repurpose them into something else. *When I cut the bottoms off of my pants, turning them into capris, I use that material to make extra pockets on those same pants (or use as cleaning rags). *I'm currently working on a project where I'm taking the material from all of my seldom worn hats and creating a duffel bag – I'm going to use the brims to create the bottom base of the bag. *I recently turned a bunch of 'I can't fit these anymore' shirts into a patterned vest.

    Let's all walk the talk!

*I have a sewist who I pay to do these things haha. But the work gets done! And if you know of any sewists, please drop me a line as Winter Cleaning begins this week in the Brodie III Household*
