A New Way To Look At National Running Safety Month

Words below by Lionel Brahim Brodie III. Article by Justin Williams, et al. as first seen and published on Running Industry Diversity Coalition’s and Running Industry Association’s “News & Updates” Blog.

November is National Running Safety Month. On our Blog here at Philadelphia Runner we shall have plenty of insightful articles and tips about what to wear, hydration, and other tools to keep us all safer, fueled, and protected.

A friend of ours, Justin Williams, founder of Unseen Run Club in The Bay Area, and a collective of others recently shared some awareness on what safety means for BIPOC members of our global running community. It is honestly a perspective that I hadn’t thought of when prepping for this month. If you don’t actually know me, I am a BIPOC runner myself. But when I think of runners’ safety, my mind tilts towards headlamps and reflective shoes. Both obviously important, but I never stop to consider the color of my skin.

I asked if we could share here because I thought this was something we could all learn from, myself included, and a great way to begin our monthlong (of course safety doesn’t fall by the wayside once December rolls in) conversation about safety.

That article can be found HERE. Both the Running Industry Diversity Coalition (RIDC) and Running Industry Association (RIA) are doing incredible work in our running world. Click on the links above and check them out!

Please keep it locked right here all month for more stories, tips, and product highlights centered around safety. Or pop into one of our 4 locations (Center City, University City, Manayunk, or Glen Mills) with questions about runner safety, or anything else running related!
