If the 2023 World Athletics Championships awarded medals for the shoe of the competition, the Nike ZoomX Dragonfly might’ve swept the podium. Worn by world class amateurs, professionals, and champions from the United States, the Netherlands, and Kenya (just to name a few places), it is definitely a spike that has been ripping up the sport since its debut.
You don’t need to be a United States Of America Track & Field (USATF) featured athlete to wear this spike. It’s built for runners chasing speed on the track, dirt, or grass at all levels from scholastic to professional. Before we jump into the shoe’s specifics, one of our own at Philadelphia Runner, and high school cross country (XC) athlete Spencer Collins has been putting in some work in XC version of the Dragons. Here are the particulars in his words…..
While racing in the new Dragonfly XC, I immediately notice how fast and easy they feel to run in. They feel slightly heavier than the Nike Zoom Victory 5, mostly due to more cushioning, but the extra weight is unnoticeable while running. It is also stiffer than the Zoom Victory 5, helping you to run fast, and slightly wider than the ZV5 which makes it easy to quickly slip on before a race while still fitting tight like you would expect in spikes. The material, especially towards the front of the shoes, is breathable, keeping your feet cool while you race. Overall…..the Dragonfly XC feels fast to run in while providing more support and comfort.
The Tech Talk:
The Dragonfly is for the cross–country barrier–breakers, the flurry–finishers who refuse to give in to the elements. It’s our fastest distance spike on the track built to go off–road, one that recently made its medal–winning presence known on the world stage. ZoomX foam adds a jolt of energy return while a wider base helps give you peace of mind in inclement conditions.
Speed Up The Tempo
The combination of full–length ZoomX foam and a full–length plate optimizes resiliency and energy return while staying lightweight.
Keep Water Away
Known for its lightweight design and low water retention, the partial Vaporweave upper helps keep the shoe light even when wet, and the soft, engineered mesh toe box helps keep your toes and forefoot comfortably contained.
Stay Secure
An added arch band helps give you a secure fit in muddy conditions and a supportive feel on uneven terrain.
Wider Base
Extra width on the base of the shoe provides extra stability and confidence on all surfaces.
