As a predominantly stability shoe runner, I get stoked when cool support models hit the market or get an update. I recently "discovered" the Vongo from New Balance, and have been loving each and every run and wear. As an unabashed sneakerhead, my second thoughts after realizing what a joy the Vongo is….."I can't wait for the new 860 to release!" The first thoughts are obviously how witty can I be in my Strava captions after each run.
The Tech Talk:
Built for reliability over the long haul and sustained comfort over all distances, the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v14 is a true go–to shoe. The 860 combines innovative Stability Plane technology with the pinnacle underfoot cushioning experience of Fresh Foam X.
Product Features (I tapped in with our local New Balance professionals to get the scoop of what we can expect with this latest upgrade):
The stability plane that runs throughout the midsole is an unblown sheet of EVA, giving the shoe the rigidity it needs to support the foot without the typical dual–density post in previous 860 versions.
If you turn the shoe over, you should be able to see two colors of midsole foam. These represent 2 densities of foams used. The foam near the heel and medial side is a slightly denser Fresh Foam compound than that used on the top bed and majority of the lateral side. The softer foam on top gives it that great step in comfort, while the slightly denser foam provides some structure and support.
Just like we did on the 880v14, the 860v14 has an additional 2mm of foam in the forefoot, giving it an even more cushioned ride and taking the drop from 10mm in 860v13 to 8mm in v14.
Countless research lab testing proves this update is just as supportive as 860v13, so no loss of stability despite the new design/stability feature in the shoe.
Specs:
Stability Plane provides performance and stability you need without compromising cushioning and the comfort of the underfoot platform.
Rocker profile.
8mm Heel–To–Toe Drop.
New Balance partnered with Repreve to incorporate recycled bottle content, making the 860v14 equal parts performance and sustainability.
The Finish Line:
The New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v14 is here NOW. I have secured this beautiful, Wiz Khalifa–inspired colorway and I’m off to get some much–needed mileage in them. Shall circle back shortly with a full report. Also, the actual colorway name is 'Grey Matter with Black and Ginger Lemon', which sounds like an unbelievably delicious, iced beverage that I'm dying to try. V similar anticipation feels for my first (of many) runs in the Eight Sixty.
